SUTHERLAND—A 35-year-old Sutherland man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting two women and then barricading himself in his house.

The arrest of Devon Lee Jones stemmed from incidents that occurred Sunday evening, Oct. 26, according to documents filed by the Sutherland Calumet Police Department in O’Brien County District Court in Primghar and O’Brien County sheriff Bruce Devereaux.

Jones initially called the O’Brien County Law Enforcement Center claiming he was going to hurt himself Sunday evening.

At about 8:15 p.m., Jones entered the home of a Sutherland woman and punched her multiple times and choked her multiple times to the point of blacking out, according to the court documents. She received serious injuries to her head and knee that required medical attention.

At about 8:30 p.m., Jones went onto the property of a second Sutherland woman and drug her across her yard and to a driveway, where he hit her with his fist and then picked up a crescent wrench and hit her with it, according to the court documents. She received serious injuries to her head, neck and arm.

Police officers and O’Brien County deputies arrived to find Jones had barricaded himself in his two-story house at 405 Main St.

There was a short standoff as Jones claimed to have gun and said he would shoot law enforcement if he came upstairs.

Officers and deputies found Jones in possession of a crossbow in his upstairs bathroom, and he pointed the weapon at them, according to the court documents.

An attempt was made to Taser Jones, but the dart missed his body.

Law enforcement then rushed Jones and took him into custody.

Jones claimed he had taken some pills, so he was transported to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center where he was kept for observation overnight.

Warrants for his arrest were obtained the same day he was arrested.

Jones was charged with first-degree burglary, a Class B felony; assault while participating in a felony causing serious injury, a Class C felony; intimidation with a dangerous weapon with the intent to injure or provoke fear, a Class C felony; two counts of willful injury causing bodily injury, Class D felonies; and assault causing bodily injury or mental illness, a serious misdemeanor.

A preliminary hearing on the charges has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in district court.

A no contact order has been issued against Jones with the first woman.
