Schools placed in lockdown as gang with crossbow 'threaten' drivers

Three men and one woman have been arrested

Schools across Wigan were put into lockdown following reports of a group wielding a crossbow and shouting at passing cars this morning. Police were called to Norley Hall Avenue following reports of the incident on Thursday (December 11).

Greater Manchester Police’s specialist operations unit tracked down the individuals at a nearby property within eight minutes of the initial report. The group was detained and the crossbow was seized. Three men in their 20s and a 22-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of carrying an offensive weapon.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed the crossbow was never fired and no casualties were reported. The suspects remain in police custody while investigations continue.

Several local schools were temporarily placed into lockdown as a safety measure, reports the Manchester Evening News.

According to GMP, there was no direct threat to any pupil or school and the schools have now been re-opened. School Engagement Officers will be visiting the affected schools today to offer support, they added.

Neighbourhood Inspector Sam Davies said: “This was an isolated incident that poses no ongoing risk to the community.

“We understand this caused concern, officers will remain visible in the area and visit affected schools today to provide reassurance. Anyone with further information or concerns is encouraged to speak to our officers or contact us directly.”
