When you open the current New York State Hunting and Fishing guide and flip to the news about deer hunting, you’ll see that there is new legislation that allows hunters in Niagara County to hunt with a rifle. There are some exclusions to the law. The archery season for whitetail deer is about to start, and this year, hunters can use a crossbow from the start! The crossbow limitations that we saw last year are gone, and there are many hunters who are excited to be back in the woods!

The weather looks very warm and dry for the opening day of archery this week. It is not the ideal weather for hunting deer, but it sure beats heavy rain and wind!

Niagara County Rifle Hunting Law

The firearms seasons will begin here in Western New York as of November 15th, and once again, there are some youth seasons mixed in. According to New York State, those who hunt in Niagara County can legally hunt with a rifle this season.

In the NY Hunting and Fishing guide for this year, it notes that: “Legislation adopted in 2024 allows use of rifles for big game hunting in Niagara County except
within the cities of Niagara Falls, Lockport, and North Tonawanda”.

Keep in mind, no matter what county you hunt in, New York State requires you to wear orange and follow the laws and regulations to keep everyone safe!
