Bows were literally more powerful than crossbows. Keep in mind they aren’t guns. Bows could easily pierce armor but crossbows were much less effective.

No, that thing is not going through plate armor. It's actually the other way around where armor was improved to defend against Bolts/Arrows. So while this would punch through Mail, the only 'Crossbow' that would punch through plate is the Ballista.
